Homework for 27 Oct (Thu)

Stretch Worksheet on Area & Perimeter

Hi 4A,

This post is for Question 1 of our Area & Perimeter Stretch Worksheet.

Method 1 solution :

To visualise by removing  the concrete path and rejoining the remaining park.

Hence the length became : 30m - 3m = 27m

Area  covered by grass =  Length x Breadth
                                      =   30 m x 27 m
                                        = 540 square metres

Some of you came up with the alternative solution of finding the area of the concrete path.

Method 2 solution:

 Area of concrete path = 3 x 20 = 60 square metres
Area of Park = 30 x 20 = 600 square metres
Area covered by grass = 600 - 60 = 540 square metres

For this solution , we need to find the area of 2 parallelograms first ( which is also Length x breadth)

Watch this video to help you visualise.

I have returned the following today for your parent's signature:

1) EDP WS : Chapter 15 Time WS 2
2) EDP WS : Chapter 13 Area & Perimeter WS 1 and WS 2

For finding perimeter of a composite figure, do use the highlighting method for finding sides of same length .

This helps you to add up less sets of numbers and hence reduce the possibility of calculation errors.

Adding up all the sides of a composite figure to find perimeter.

Adding up all the 8 sides separately  may cause calculation errors .

 Examples of highlighting method:

Using highlighting method , we only need to add 4 sets of numbers to find teh perimeter compared to 8 sets of numbers.
Using highlighting method, we added up 4 sets of numbers to find the perimeter compared to adding 8 sets of numbers .

Another example: We added up 6 sets of numbers ( 2 greens sides, 2 yellow sides and 2 purple sides ) instead of adding up 8 sides.

Ordering of Fractions - Best Practices

Best practices for ordering of fractions.

Step 1 : Converted to equivalent fractions of the same denominator

Step 2 : Label "greatest, middle and smallest' by their sides.

Step 3 : Circle the original fractions as given in teh questions.

Step 4 : Transfer the fractions into your  answer space in increasing or decreasing order as required
              by the question.

Step 3 is important to remind yourself to express your final answer following the fractions given in the questions and NOT the equivalent fraction you have converted.  Many of you made the mistake of writing your final answers as the converted fractions.

Decimals

Here are some photos of our class learning decimals.

Comparing Fractions

We had a class activity where we work with poker cards to compare fractions.

Challenge 1

The pupils worked in pairs to pick 2 random cards each. The smaller digit will be the numerator and the larger digit will be the denominator.

They compare the fractions doing the workings in their notebooks and the player with the larger fraction wins a point.

They next form improper fractions and compare them too.

Challenge 2

They next work in groups of 4 to compare and order their fractions. The player with the greatest fraction wins 4 points. The next player with the next greater fractions wins 3 points and so on . The player with the smallest fraction earns 1 point.

This is more challenging and I love the rich math discussion that were going on in the groups as they taught each other how to compare. I observed that pupils were using Math language to reason and "convince" their group members why they fraction is the greatest.

Special thanks to all the parents who loaned and contributed the cards.

Here are some photos of our activity and learning .

Thank you Joel Tan for helping me to capture the above concepts taught.

Of Fractions, Cheering and Self-Study

Hello from the other side,

I am here with useful content. Sit back, read EVERYTHING patiently and focus hocus pocus.

1. About your math homework (video links below)

Homework is MPAH WB 4B Pg 5-10 (I'm looking at the few of you who didn't bring your books today >:(   the rest of you have already done at least up to page 7)
Due WEDNESDAY, 4th MAY

Pg 7:
As mentioned, Question 1 breaks it down for you step by step. There are blanks for you to write down ALL your working.

Question 2 cuts straight to the chase: they give you a mixed number, you give them the improper fraction.
Use the diagram and your common sense (hehehe) to check your answer!

Pg 9:
Question 1: Do all your working EXACTLY as is shown in 1(a). Again for your reference, here is how I did it:

And here are 2 videos: the one I showed you, as well as our good friend from Math Antics.

2. Your Class Cheer

Here's the cheer I suggested, use it if you like it.

4A dynamite, don't mess with dynamite! *clap* *clap* *clap*        x2
(now stomp your feet too)
4A dynamite, don't mess with dynamite! *clap* *clap* *clap*        x2
Ohhhhh.... 4A!
HA! (right hand up)
HOO! (left hand up)
HAIYA!!! (in your best Bruce Lee voice, and in a fighting stance)

Here's another one, as a bonus:

Leaders (about 5 people): When I say 4A you say OH!
Leaders:4A!
Class: OH!
Leaders: 4A!
Class: OH!

Leaders: When I say 4A you say YEAH!
Leaders: 4A!
Class: YEAH!
LEaders: 4A!
Class: YEAH!

Leaders: When I say 4A you say OH, when I say 4A you say YEAH
Leaders: 4A 4A!
TOGETHER: Ohhhhhhhh YEAHHHH!!!!!!!

(sorry I couldn't find videos for these heh)

3. Self-Study

Here's the rough schedule I wrote on the whiteboard just now, which you can use to revise/study ANY subject. All you need is your textbook and a blank sheet of paper.

1 min - skim (flip through the chapter, reading only TITLES and WORDS IN BOLD
1 min - jot down what you recall
3-5 mins - read the chapter (re-read if you're done before the time is up)
2 mins - closed book recall (close your book and jot down everything you can recall from your reading)
3-5 mins - read again
2 mins - closed book recall
3 mins - open book recall (now you can refer to your book to fill in any gaps or points you missed)
5 mins - short break

Voila, one chapter done.

Adjust the timings as necessary, for example you might find that 5 minutes of reading is too short, so bump it up to 8. Or you might find that 2 minutes is not enough to write down all you can recall, so bump it up to 3 or 4 minutes.

Alright that's all from me. See y'all tomorrow.

Take care of yourselves and one another, and always be nice.

SYMM | MMY5

Greetings, students of 4A. It is I, here to send you a message from beyond (the classroom, not from the grave).

Some of you might have this symbol all over your worksheet:

That is what you call a crosshair. It is used in many contexts but some of you might recognize it from your shooter or sniper games. It draws your focus to the centre, and is used for ACCURATE positioning.

If YOU see a crosshair on your worksheet it means I have an issue with the accuracy of your drawing. Sometimes I also indicate with an arrow WHERE you were inaccurate.

Here's what you need in your symmetry drawings:
1) use a pencil and ruler
2) use a dashed line - - - - - - - - - -
3) it must cut the figure EXACTLY into two equal halves that are mirror images
4) let the line start and end OUTSIDE the figure, like this:

And remember your origami paper?

The fold you made was the line of symmetry. If you didn't realize that then I hope you are #mindblown.

Here is the shape that Gabriel made with his origami paper. Arrange it one way and you have a symmetric shape, the other and it isn't.

At first it isn't symmetric:

Then we flip one half and voila! Symmetric!

Lastly, if you're still not clear or satisfied with the demonstration of the dollar sign NOT being a symmetric shape, then... be a little hardworking and draw it out for yourself! Hard work pays off :D

That's all, folks. Take care of yourselves, of one another, and always be nice.
